Prevention Is the Cure

While getting my car serviced last week, I saw a “startling” set of tires that were just taken off a vehicle. These tires were unevenly worn out – obviously so, even to my untrained eye – they skewed so much to one side, they no longer had a cleanly circular shape. The service mechanic referred to their state as dangerous asymmetry. I thought, aha, that’s a great term…and it doesn’t just apply to tires.

When it comes to the human body, asymmetry presents itself in stages. First, something simply looks off. Next, something feels off. Then, movement becomes stifled. And ultimately – the end of the line – we’ve got ourselves an injury and our personal vehicle, our physical body, needs to go to the repair shop – a.k.a., dangerous asymmetry. What a bummer, right? Well, it’s preventable with mindful movement.

The regular habit of real authentic mindful movement makes it nearly impossible for us to reach dangerous asymmetry. Why? Because when we move mindfully, we notice what’s going on and course correct before things go too far. When we move mindfully we become sensitive to our state of symmetry and gravitate towards balance. When the littlest imbalances in range of motion, strength or tracking and gait present themselves, they are nipped in the bud.

Want to look good? Want to feel good? Want to shine bright for the long haul (longevity)? Look no further than mindful movement. Prevention is the best cure. Let’s Move!
