Adapt & Thrive

Greetings from Narraganset, Rhode Island, the quintessential New England beach town I’ve been coming to pretty much every summer since I married Steve in 2004. Sometimes, our time here is just a day trip, but this year we’re doing a whole week. We have extended family here and it was time to get the kids together and really do it up.

Like most people on vacation, my workout routine is thrown off. I’m in a different setting, people are around 24/7, and I have a totally different schedule, but I knew that would be the case coming in, so I didn’t expect to be working out per usual. I’ve simplified my movement goals for this week. Here they are:

  1. To look for the opportunities to move and take advantage of them when they present themselves. For the first few days of the trip, with what seemed like non-stop rain, the kids started playing spike ball on a covered porch. When “yoga at the beach” was cancelled, I ended up doing 5minutes of sun salutations in my little rental house’s living room. When the rain subsided for those small windows of time, we took short bike rides in our flip-flops, traversed the bluffs, attempted to play pickle ball, and tossed the frisbee around. Vigilance saves the day! (It’s been incredibly humid so a 20minute walk left us heavy with sweat….never seen anything like it!)
  2. To stay really strong in the drinking water department. A water bottle is with me at all times and each day, I wake up and drink up, first thing. Water gives me energy and in my mind I think to myself, “The least I can do is stay hydrated.”
  3. To be outside as much as possible. Outside is a gym. When the sun finally came out yesterday, we walked and swam and spent 10 hours barefoot on the beach – it was blissful and movement was plentiful. Plus, we worked up a sweat biking to and from the beach with our beach chairs strapped to our backs. The one sunny day sort of “made up’ for the other days where we didn’t move like we wanted to.

Many of us bring “Let’s Move!” on our travels – bravo to that! All you need is wifi, a bit of space and a little me time. Options abound! We really can keep moving…if there’s a will, there’s a wayIt’s not all or nothingAdapt and thrive. (Those are three high vibe affirmations right there…😉) Happy July everyone!
