Today! With a Twist!
On those days you can’t get a full workout in, or maybe you can’t even carve out a five minute walk…or perhaps you are a bit under the weather ….on those days, all I ask is that you do a spine twist to each side. You can do spine twists while lying in bed, sitting at your desk, standing in your kitchen or lounging on the couch. They are incredibly beneficial. Here’s what they do:
- They stretch the core muscles which helps maintain a functional range of motion.
- They promote circulation to the core organs especially the kidneys, liver and spleen.
- They aid in elimination as the digestive organs get massaged by twisting.
- They help unblock kundalini energy and release tension.
- They promote lymphatic flow, especially in the gut.
- They often eradicate pain and feel fantastic!
Basically, spine twisting is a boon for your overall health. Joe Pilates said, “A man is as young as his spinal column. If your spine is stiff at 30, you are old. If it is flexible at 60, you are young.” It’s no coincidence that Mr.Pilates has a plethora of spine twists in his method!
Surely you can find a moment to twist today. Maybe it’s a long reclining set of twists, held for a few minutes on each side. Maybe it’s a quick seated upright twist, with some added neck rotations. Spine twists are free, y’all! They’re simple too! And from what I have gathered in my 30year career in the movement world, they are one of the best things you can do for your body – happy twisting!
