Going the Distance
All I wanna do is go the distance.” – Rocky Balboa
Rocky, the self-help guru? I think so! My family and I watched one of the Rocky movies over the weekend and there was one scene where Adrien is trying to talk Rocky out of fighting Creed. His response is, “All I wanna do is go the distance.” I immediately felt a ping upon hearing it. I thought, “That’s what I want to do too, Rocky…just not in a boxing ring, but in life.”
Going the distance with a 30minute workout or going the distance with a long term goal means sticking it out, seeing things through, and getting to the priceless sensation of “I’ve done my best and given it my all.” We mustn’t quit too soon, you know? Quitting could potentially hurt our self-esteem. And, we must hold a strong vision of our ideal selves. What is it that you want to be, do and have?
There is no doubt that when we go the distance, we feel good about ourselves, and the outcome becomes of secondary importance. “Earning” this sense of self-satisfaction is a beautiful thing, and it’s a big part of wellness.
When things get bleak, remember, it’s a test. Can you stay in the game? Will you stay in the game? Things got bleak for Rocky too, but what did he do? He went the distance!
