You Are Rich With “Right Now”

After two solid days of rain, it finally stopped. It was soggy and humid, and the air was thick. The trail was muddy and I was sweating profusely underneath my raincoat, but with temperatures in the low 50’s, I needed to wear it. Basically, it was gross outside. Not ideal conditions for a long hike, but that’s what I intended to do – an eight mile hike up to the pinnacle.

10minutes in, I could have called to my dogs and turned us around, heading back to the trailhead. I thought about it. It crossed my mind repeatedly. In fact, there is a nice 20 minute loop that’s all flat, runs along the river, and I could have easily just done that. I could have said to myself, “Turn around, go home, get out of these wet clothes. You’ve got a legit excuse.”

Now, I have done that many times before. I’ve shortened or cancelled a workout based on unforeseen circumstances, like bad weather. Sometimes, it’s the right call. This time however, putting a kibosh on my workout session was unwarranted.

Sure, I was uncomfortable and it was unpleasant, but when are conditions 100percent perfect?  When it comes to working out, and lots of other self-help tools, empowered wellness calls for a carpe diem attitude.

So at the fork in the trail where I had a choice to turn back or continue on, I continued on by thinking to myself, “Seize the day, Ellen. The time is now.”

Which was true! I didn’t have another window of time to get this workout in. The humidity was probably only going to get worse. I had to appreciate that this opportunity existed, however un-ideal it was, and go with it.

Carpe Diem is, by definition, the urge to make the most of the present time. Amen to that!

So let’s make the most of right now. Let’s make the most of today. How about making the most of your life?!
