Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

In the US, we’re heading into Memorial Day weekend, which is sort of like a kickoff to summer. It is always “hit or miss” weather-wise. I remember sunbathing by the pool in 80 degrees this time of year, and I also remember torrential rains for four days straight. You just never know.

Memorial Day weather in Connecticut is a metaphor for life. You never know what’s in store. Things don’t always go as planned.

An often overlooked “skill” is to not get thrown off too easily.  Out of all my personal training clients, the ones that thrive possess this. Sure, they hope for a sunny day, but for them stormy skies are not the end of the world. It’s a big sign of maturity, when you can stay as close to on course as you can, not get derailed, and adjust to the circumstances when necessary. Traffic, illness or injury, rough weather, and a myriad of other things can look like roadblocks, but after a deep breath or two and some grounded reassessment, forward motion can continue.

This perfectly applies to exercise. Got stuck on a call and missed your workout class? Canceled your tennis match due to hurricane conditions? Showed up at the gym to find it closed for renovation? All is not lost! Remember your goal of movement, and find a way to move. It may not be your planned workout routine, but it’s the next best thing. Be a thriver and always remember: where there’s a will there’s a way.
