The Fifth Element

You may or may not recall a movie, from the nineties, called The Fifth Element. It starred Milla Jovovich, and it held the premise that there are the usual four elements – fire, water, earth, and air – along with an additional element, the ultimate one. The four elements are the “brick and mortar” of life, but the fifth element powers it.

So what actually is the fifth element?  Well, in the futuristic movie, it was “Aether, a pure substance that permeated the celestial sphere.” In real life, it’s spirit.

Now, while I found most of the movie to be just okay, I do remember one fabulous scene towards the end, where the fifth element, shows up just in the knick of time and saves the world from destruction. It was very moving and filled me with inspiration! I felt so muchyes to the concept of an almighty energy, a supreme goodness, invisible to the eye yet real as day.

Sometimes, people think the fifth element is the only part of life that truly matters, but what’s a soul without a body? What’s a body without a soul? All five elements matter, because the body (the totality of the first four elements) is where your fifth element plays itself out. Thus, we should all should care deeply about physical wellbeing (go ahead and obsess over it every now and again!) AND we should also care deeply about spirit. Spirit is chugging away full-time/nonstop behind the scenes, powering life up.

I’ll leave you with two parting sentiments that I hope motivate you to get to your mat today:
1. Working out properly and taking good care of your body is a spiritual act.
2. Mindful movement can be a celebration of the fifth element.

So much yes, right?
