Reoccurring Themes

Let’s Move! has officially turned eight years old. We have a catalog of 115+ workout videos now, and a huge amount of blog posts discussing, analyzing, and musing over, movement and mindset. Upon close inspection of all of this content, you’ll see there are three reoccurring themes at Let’s Move! Here they are:

1. Movement is a privilege.

I know, I know, you “hated P.E. class” or “sweating is gross” but don’t let preconceived notions deter you from the greatness that is exercise. Keep kissing those frogs until you come across the one that’s actually enjoyable, desirable and feels like a total privilege. When movement become something you intrinsically want to do, getting and staying fit is easy.

When I was a teenager, taking my very first aerobics classes, there was an instructor I adored, named Francie Callahan. She looked like Linda Carter (who played Wonder Woman), very statuesque, with dark hair and blue eyes. Francie was always so happy to be in that aerobics room…smiling from ear to ear. Every song was so good. Every movement was so fun. Francie was a huge influence but not in the biomechanics of exercise way. It was her attitude towards exercise that has stayed with me all this time, which was oh, what a pleasure it is to move.

2. The #1 reason for regular exercise is a better life.

The effects of movement are way bigger than health and fitness. They are body, mind and spirit. They are personal life and professional life. There are today and tomorrow. They transcend the body. Exercises keeps us sharp, keeps energy flowing, and gives us a sense of can-do-it-ness. When I started, I worked out for my body, but I very quickly realized that I was working out for a better me.

3.  Regular exercise is the most potent self-help tool in the Universe.

Unless you are in the military or on a sports team, exercise is self-administered and self-directed (a.k.a., self-help). It is up to you! You don’t need anyone else’s permission or assistance. Just move. Depression? Diabetes? Poverty mindset? PMS? Low self-worth? Chronic fatigue? There is some form of movement – and it might be as simple as conscious breathing – that’ll help move you towards better health and healing. Movement is medicine. Ignoring and/or undervalue-ing daily exercise is the biggest mistake someone can make, in my opinion.

Movement that’s enjoyable is sustainable and, in due time, transformative.
