“Lazy Workout” Is an Oxymoron
Here are the top five things that make a workout effective:
It promotes better blood circulation.
It helps to regulate the nervous system.
It builds better muscular symmetry.
It fine tunes skeletal alignment.
It fortifies the body/mind connection.
Every single one of these things can be achieved in a challenging workout or in a gentle one.
Recently, I heard someone refer to a Pilates class as a lazy workout. He said, “You just lie on your back, thinking and breathing!” I got a kick out of his description and see why someone would see it like that, but just because someone is not jumping up and down or pumping iron doesn’t mean workout goals aren’t being met.
Every single day, when it comes to your workout, you need to be Goldilocks. You need to decide for yourself, “What’s just right for me right now?” That means feeling into your self and making sure the porridge isn’t too hot or too cold, and the bed isn’t too hard or too soft.
I think it’s a sign of high fitness intelligence and healthy self-love, when you lead with, “What’s just right right now?”
And it’s not about the actual movement or exercise. A push-up, for instance, can be challenging or gentle depending on intensity, speed, duration, and one’s attitude towards it.
Just right right now is also nuanced. I’m a big hiker, and a two hour hike with no incline often feels quite gentle, but there’s a 45minute hike up to the lookout peak and back down that I find very challenging but love it. When I ask myself, “What’s just right, right now?” sometimes the lookout peak is calling my name…and sometimes it’s not. Fitness goals can be met peacefully and without suffering.
There is no such thing as a lazy workout, and taking care of yourself is never a lazy act. In fact, partaking in any form of mindful movement garners an A for effort.
