Are You Falling in & Out of Fitness?

There are two secrets to getting and sustaining a fit body. The first is mindset-related, and the second is movement-related.

Secret #1: when it comes to mindset, the “always fit” people zoom out. They focus on whole person well-being.  They know one’s mind and spirit are tagging along to the biological body. In fact, the body/mind/spirt is a Siamese triplet. The “always fit” also care for all 11 system of the body: nervous, skeletal, circulatory (cardiovascular), lymphatic, endocrine, respiratory,  reproductive, digestive, muscular, urinary, and integumentary (skin and such).

To only tend to muscles is an amateur move.

Physical fitness is only one component of empowered wellness. There are lots of “fit bodied” people who are mentally ill, struggling with depressing and/or self-loathing. There are also lots of “fit bodied” people who are spiritually bankrupt, experiencing extreme loneliness, and/or a lack of motivation/inspiration. These people will be unable to sustain their physical fitness levels because compartmentalizing the self doesn’t work in the end. (I’ve seen this kind of thing play out countless times!)

Secret #2: when it comes to movement, the “always fit” people have acquired a workout habit, where movement is a way of life. I surmise that the workout habit gets ingrained over time, so the earlier you start, the earlier you’ll experience the effects of this powerful secret. I think there are many “always fit” fifty-somethings right now, because we were lucky to have “caught” the workout bug from the 80’s aerobics scene, and kept it.  Now, let it be known that the best kind of workout habit is a flexible one. Can’t workout at 9am? Inclement weather? The 9am class was cancelled?  The “always fit” adjust accordingly and still get some movement in.  When plan A isn’t an option, that’s okay – Plan B or C or D is in the queue. Move, move. move, someway somehow, for its real medicine, both a quick fix and preventative.

Movement pays us back immediately, yet still accrues interest. (Some might call this a good investment.)

So if you’re someone falling in & out of fitness, put your efforts on embodying the top two secrets of the “always fit:” #1, get a big picture mindset and focus on whole person well-being, and #2, get the movement habit, where exercise will never be denied.

Let’s Move!
