A Few Thoughts On Aging
Yes, I am getting older. Yes, I feel the societal “pressure” regarding women and aging. And yes, I have a few things to say about it!
For one, I like myself. Why is that so radical? I like how I look and I like how I feel and I like what I’ve grown to be. I don’t want to go back in time and I am excited for what’s to come. I do not have media to thank for my abundance of self-like. In fact, the media loves to chip away at it. They make money if I have self-loathing, but I know their game and refuse to play it. Your own opinion of yourself is the one that matters most.
Secondly, I feel very empowered when it comes to my physical and mental health. The ball is in my court! Sure, there are things beyond my control, but with a healthy proactive lifestyle, I have no fear.
Third, I love young people! They inspire me so much. I never compare myself to younger women or feel competitive towards them. (I actually feel slightly maternal.) This is a very important point. We are a sisterhood, ladies, and anywhere you or I fall on the timeline of life is an honor. The best age is the age you are.
One last thing…a healthy relationship to age starts with accepting it. That’s why I never lie about my age. I’m 50, and I’m glad I made it this far! If you look around, you’ll see – health and happiness can be had at any age, and role models are everywhere. We’ve got lots to be grateful for, and lots to look forward to. So smile. Be stoked. And keep going.
